Broughton Bouldering Wall Guide

November1999 Update

Broughton Bouldering Wall's aficionados have really got there act together. The regular users have catalogued and recorded  heaps of really good problems. The problems are are all really good, and having a tick list is a positive benefit (and saves thinking). Also it means you can't fool yourselves regarding the grade you are bouldering at. If you are in the Manchester area then the wall is worth seeking out. The mats are a little past there best by, but they should be replaced fairly soon. One of the lads (Nick Colton, of Colton/McIntyre route on the Jorasses) has been trying to get me down to the wall for a couple of years. I finally went and  am now now hooked.

Construction of the wall is sprayed concrete with embedded rock holds and some insets, built by Bendcrete and a damn good job they have done too. All the holds are numbered or lettered  with paint for ease of recognition. Apart from the wall, there is a tortuous cellar room and horribly strenuous ladder board thingies that ruin your shoulders, elbows and everything else.
