Megagrip Walk, Run, Mountain Bike RoutesWhite Holme Reservoir Round, LancashireWhite Holme is near Rochdale and Todmorden, Lancashire, within easy reach of the M62 trans Pennine Motorway. The round is intended as a run or walk, but the evidence of mountain bike use is clear. The views across Hollingworth Lake to the South West and into the Todmorden valley are excellent, and the other attractive feature of the round is that it is almost flat, ideal for an easy day and a pint afterwards. It is also on excellent tracks and paths, so is very run-able. The other advantage of the route is that you can combine the walk/run/ride with climbing on Summit Quarry (en route and faces the afternoon and evening sun), the nearby Blackstone Edge, or just boulder in (usually on your own). The area has many more paths than shown, so you can extend or shorten at will. An extension visit to Stoodley Pike is recommended if you have time. The Pike is a monument 120 feet high and there is a viewing platform at 40 feet up. It was built to celebrate the British victory over Napoleon in 1814. A remarkable thing about the monument (apart from the fantastic views over Calder Valley) is that it was built by popular subscription to commemorate not the end of a war, or the dead of war, but the OUTBREAK OF PEACE ! A subtle and refreshingly different approach from the people whose area also gave birth to the Co-operative movement.
